The Security and Safety Initiative of Class 1 Railroads

Given heightened concerns regarding national security, increased incidents of malfeasance, and natural disasters, the major Class 1 Railroads operating in the United States and Canada have adopted a number of joint safety and security procedures to safeguard their people and assets.

As part of these efforts, contractors doing or seeking to do business with any of the major railroads are now required to be compliant with both the internal and regulatory requirements of the railroads. e-RAILSAFE was developed to help ease this process.

e-RAILSAFE will...

• Allow employees of a railroad contractor to complete the safety and security awareness tests

• Automatically submit employees for a background investigation

• Issue an ID badge to each employee (upon completion of test and background check) that will be mandatory to wear when on railroad property*

• Allow employers (contractors) to safely manage all employees

*Scoring criteria for this program is set by the participating railroads.
